Europe is victor in World Cup of language

SAMMY runs the bar and bistro next to The Age's former World Cup domicile on the outskirts of Stuttgart. Sammy is from Tunisia, but has lived in many places. About 30 years ago, he worked for a while at the vast US army base in the Black Forest and struck up lasting friendships there. Now he lives in Steinenbronn with his adult son, his Vietnamese-born partner and his 1100 bottles of wine.

Sammy speaks six languages and can read in three scripts: Western, Arabic and, oddly enough, Hebrew. His sunny disposition is only ever clouded by one topic. He loathes war.
