High-level FIFA Delegation In South Africa To Visit Venues

A high-level delegation from the international football body FIFA was in South Africa Tuesday for a five-day inspection tour, local media reported.

Competitions division director Jim Brown, head of media operations Alain Leiblang, head of FIFA South African World Cup 2010 office Michael Palmer and Horst Schmidt, coordinator in South Africa were among the FIFA officials visiting venues for the Confederations Cup in 2009.

That tournament is seen mainly as a practice run for the World Cup in South Africa the following year.

Many of the details of the visit were being kept under raps by the local World Cup organizing committee but the team were expected to assess progress on the upgrading of existing stadia and the building of new facilities in Johannesburg, Durban and other cities.
